Dahilan ... Tinapay

Sinulat ni Laura B. Corpuz, Marso, 1965, laurabc@bumail.bradley.edu
~~
~~
Walang pag-aalinlangang siya'y aking nilapitan
Ang dalawang maliliit na kamay ay hinawakan
Mga luhang dumadaloy sa pisngi ay pinahiran
At pinalis yaong duming nasa damit na pulahan.
~~
~~

Filipino Superstitions

Compiled by Laura B. Corpuz
laurabc@bumail.bradley.edu

The Filipino daily way of life is encompassed by countless sayings, proverbs, and beliefs. People tend to work around the superstitions even if they were told they may be committing a sin. Many Filipinos believe in superstitions to avoid any negative consequences. They may be true; they may be not. We hear them from our parents and grandparents, even without scientific findings or logical reasons. Most often they are coincidental and are usually referred to after the effect. Yet, superstitions are interesting components of the chemistry of Filipinos’ day in and day out activities. These are carefully observed at holidays and special occasions. Notice the Filipinos residing in other countries carry on the superstitions. "Pamahiin lang iyan," and “Masyado kang mapamahiin” are sometimes heard from the Filipinos who want to deviate from superstitions. Undoubtedly, some of the superstitions are practiced by my friends, including me, to make an occasion a fun one. I don’t see any problem with them; superstitions only tell us to be careful with whatever we want to do. I still believe in our Creator and like what Francisco Balagtas Baltazar said,

“Datapuwat sino ang tatarok kaya
Sa mahal mong lihim, Diyos na Dakila
Walang nangyayari sa balat ng lupa
Na ‘di may kagalingang iyong ninanasa.”

Besides, God is all knowing.

* Fill up your canisters with rice, sugar, flour, salt, etc. on New Year's Eve. You'll live a plenty for the coming year.

* Friends coming to a new home must enter through the front doors.

* Don't buy a house that's directly at the T intersection, it's a bad omen signifying that you'll always be pushed.

* If a shooting star is sighted, there might be a fire. It's good luck if you're able to say tomorrow's day name before the shooting star disappears and a chance to win the "huweteng” game.

* Hang braided/strands of garlic to drive bad spirit away.

Party, Health, Food

* Serve rice noodles on your birthday; it means long life.

Wedding/Marriage/Childbearing

* Lovers must not give rosary or necklace to each other, if it breaks, the relationship might also get broken

* The bride or groom whose candle lasts longer will have a longer life to live.

* Bride: When the priest gives the signal "stand up or kneel down", make sure, you make the first move. This is so the husband does not completely rule over you.

* Never try on your wedding gown; it's a sign that the wedding may be cancelled.

* The Bride and groom shouldn't be traveling to distant places before the wedding; they are accident prone at this time.

* "Sukob sa taon" (within same calendar year) marriages among brothers and sisters must be avoided. There will always be life competitions between the two couples.

* If you were the oldest child, avoid marrying another oldest child. Both of you would tend to lead the other that could lead to problems in life. This is true to the youngest child marrying another youngest child. They'll both feel like wanted to be given attention.

* If you were the youngest child, it's best to marry an oldest child. There will be better understanding between the two of you.

* When coming indoors after an afternoon's game/play with a child; mention or call the child's name before entering the house. It's believed that the child's spirit might be left
outdoors and this would cause the child to have a sleepless night.

* Wrap the newly born baby's umbilical cord, paper and pencil in a plastic bag; throw the bag in the river and watch what happens. If it goes far, it means that the child will go to

Dead, Death, and Dying

* When a dog is howling, making a spooky cry, it means that death is coming to someone.

*A beautiful flower or candle scent smelled in a home after a death of a beloved, means there's a spirit of the dead visiting who wants the relatives to know he/she's around. Pray for his/her soul.

* When someone is dying, say "JESUS" out loud so the dying person will hear it and repeat the word for his salvation.

* If a pregnant woman is a close relative of the dead, make sure that she leaves the house first before the body is taken to be buried. She might have a difficult time delivering the baby if she doesn't. (Many visitations are held in homes, and from there the dead are taken to the cemetery.)

* When sending a rosary with the corpse; cut it into pieces. This is believed to hinder anymore tragedy in the family.

* Take the shoes off the corpse; to lessen the spirit's weight in its journey to heaven.

* If the dead person is a mother/father to an infant or a little child, pick up the child and pass him or her over the coffin, so the spirit won't appear to the child.

* A succor asked of the dead is very powerful.

* Don't carry your hands on top of your head; one of your parents might die.

* When you are dreaming and a dead person asks you to come along with him/her, DON'T go.

* It's a bad omen if you dream of riding in a boat.

* If you dreamt of yourself dying; bite the trunk of the tree in your backyard so that bad omen would go to the tree instead of to you.

* If someone dreamt of loosing a tooth, it means that someone in the family might be dying.

* When the funeral procession is passing by your house, awaken the person sleeping; otherwise he/she may be the next one to die.

* If a butterfly comes flattering around inside someone’s house, it means that the spirit of a loved one that had passed away is visiting or reminding the family to pray for the dead; it may also be a reminder that a death anniversary is coming soon.

* Dress all infants in bright red when someone in the family dies so that the spirit of the dead does not appear to the child.

Money/Gift Giving/Receiving

* When giving a purse/wallet as a gift, put some coins/notes in it.

* When transferring contents from an old purse/wallet to a new one, do not invert purse/wallet. It might run empty.

* Never leave a purse on the floor; always set it on something, or your budget might run low.

* It's good to be discrete about your finances but never say "I have no money," or else you might lose money and will really NOT have any money.

* 99 centavos is not a peso. 99 cents is not a dollar.

* Don't accept footwear from a friend; he/she might be stepping on your toes later.

* Don’t accept knives as gift; offer a small amount of money.

Moles

* A birth mark around the eye means you are appealing to guys.

* A birth mark on the chest means you are a true lover.

* If someone has a mole on the sole of the foot, it means that person loves to walk all the time.

Mga Palaisipan (Bugtong)

Compiled by Laura B. Corpuz, laurabc@bumail.bradley.edu, from High School and College Notes (1956 - 1966) with more riddles from the References listed at the bottom of the page. Some of these riddles were translated from many dialects into our national language, Filipino, for rhyming and better understanding purposes.

Many of our old folks never allowed us to say riddles except during wake time and only if the riddles were "homework." My cousins and I oftentimes would use "homework" as an excuse for reciting riddles. Some of these riddles may sound familiar, however, there are a few that are hardly heard of because of their antiquity. When I was still young, the riddles almost always started like this- "Marunong ka man at maalam, angkan ka ng mga paham, turan mo." ("You may be wise and intelligent, belonging to a learned ancestry, name it.") Well, let's have a little brain exercise. (Note: These riddles may have been heard, said, or written in a different way, but they express the same ideas.)

ARAW NG MGA AMA - HUNYO

Sinulat ni Laura Balatbat-Corpuz
Ika-14 ng Agosto, 2007
~~

FATIMA Song (Filipino)

O Birhen ng Fatima
Kami'y dumudulog
Sa mahal mong alindog
Ay napapakupkop.

Sa amin ay ipakita

Pangako mo ay tupdin
Hiling nami'y dinggin
Digmaan ay papawiin
Lahat pag-isahin.

Ina'y huwag siphayuin
Ang aming dalangin
Kaming lahat ay ampunin
At itong bayan namin.

GESTURES: Only a Touch of Filipino Culture

~~
Laura B. Corpuz, 8-14-1996, laurabc@bumail.bradley.edu

Hosting international students from Bradley University provided my family very rewarding experiences and opportunities to understand various cultures. Recognizing and understanding the uniqueness of other people’s cultures are equally vital for better communication. It is amazing how often we hear people say "actions speak louder than words." Awareness and understanding of these gestures is a big step toward a better global communication.

People in any ethnic background sometimes express their love, joy, disappointments, anger, friendship, success, failure, as well as their emotions, through gestures. This is also known as "body language." Gestures do add beauty to any type of communication. They help or supplement what we try to say but some gestures have ethnical values. Some gestures are exhibited in place of words. These gestures are instinctively demonstrated due to the force of habit. Our faith and beliefs play some important roles in the expressions of these ethnical gestures. What is important is that we understand what people try to convey.

Notice the gesture that to Filipinos means "no" but to some nationalities, it means "yes." What I felt was a rude, belittling and animal beckoning gesture is a perfectly acceptable gesture expressed by other people. "Gestures are only a touch of Filipino cultures.” Let's look at some of these gestures and their after effects.

RUBBING FOREHEAD: Rubbing the forehead of an infant making the sign of the cross so the child won't be "ma‑usog." Coming on too strong frightens an infant/child causing it to run a temperature. (Just what the old folks say.)

HEAD SHAKING: Shaking head (horizontal) left to right means "no” a bit confused or "I don't know" gesture.

MOVING HEAD down once is a beckoning gesture. Sometimes this means "I don't know.”

HEAD NODDING: Nodding head up and down (vertical) or at times tango only, means
"yes" or consent.

However, there are times when Filipinos make this gesture to someone insistently in asking for something. If this is the case "yes" means "no" or "fed up."

FLASHING EYEBROW AND EYE WINKING: These are demonstrated together or at
different times. They both mean "I have a crush on you; “I like you;” or "masama ang tama," (flirting).

“ Winking eye” also means an understanding that two individuals have a secret to keep.

Depending on the situation, this may look so rude to someone of status. This can also be an aggravating gesture.

HEAD SCRATCHING: An angry, aggravated and irritated adults makes this gesture. You don't want to be a victim of someone who is angry.

For students taking exam, this may mean "I don't know the answer(s). Sometimes it is accompanied by teeth biting*. Or, student might know the answer but couldn't think of it. It is a frustrating gesture.

TEETH BITING “NANGGIGIGIL”: A gesture of both anger and admiration. At this point of anger, it's better to remain silent to avoid conflict. An admiration of a cute baby/infant makes you feel like squeezing it. Just imagine a darling, huggable with beautiful eyes baby/infant. You cannot resist pinching the baby’s cheek. Not to hard though.

FOREFINGER IN CIRCULAR MOTION: A sign that someone is "kulang‑kulang,”
"maluwag ang turnilyo" "medyo‑medyo" (crazy, lose screws).

DIRTY LOOK "IRAP": What a nasty and hatred gesture! Another interpretation of this gesture is jealousy/envious look.

DILATED EYES/PUPIL means "discontinue" whatever it is a child is doing. We call this "makuha ka sa tingin."

Others may interpret this as being curious and cannot believe what is in front of their eyes. Shocking and jaw dropping as well.

In some cases, children who are accustomed to these gestures, either dilated eyes or a mere look or a little stare are praised by the elderly and commended for their politeness and obedience to their parents/adults. (Nakukuha sa tingin)

STARING AT SOMEBODY: This is rude and very impolite. However, this can also mean someone is so fascinated or attracted to someone’s beauty.

EYE POINTING/LOOKING IN THE CORNER OF ONE'S EYE: While a look in the corner of one's eyes with a funny face means, “I really don't care; "Who cares.” or "So what." This is also used to point at an object or to secretly say "the one I look at is ...".

STARING AT NOTHING (TULALA): Amazing look! May also be interpreted as confused, thinking hard/deeply, day‑dreaming, hallucinating, or losing one’s mind.

ROLLING EYES: This means confused. "I don't know what he/she is talking about." "It must be so funny, I forgot to laugh," attitude. Also, this is what others may say, a very sarcastic gesture.

WRINKLED EYEBROWS: In some gatherings, someone might be confused about something and would wrinkle his/her eyebrows. Sometimes it is followed by a slight head shake and a funny face.

HEAD TILTING: Another gesture used to point at an object. "Come this way" (head tilted to a certain direction/point).

LIP POINTING: Watch Filipinos use their lips to point at an object, or a person. It’s hilarious.

OBJECT TOUCHING/POINTING: At times we touch the object we prefer to buy or to get.
"The one I touch is what I like." "Buy it for me dad."

CHIN RESTING ON ONE HAND: A gesture expressing "loss in business" (nalugi).

STICKING OUT TONGUE: "Belat" "Good for you." (Irony). A negative gesture very common among children who are glad somebody got in trouble instead of him/her. It is worse when children hold the corners of their mouth while sticking out their tongues at someone in trouble.

POUTING WITH A SAD FACE: An angry gesture demonstrating disagreement or just being "moody. (Usually shown by young children who don't want to obey.) If demonstrated by an adult, observers would make a comment like, “Mukhang Biyernes Santo" (Good Friday Face). Watch Out! You could get in trouble for no reason.

PICKING FOOD OFF BETWEEN TEETH (With a toothpick or by twirling tongue in the mouth): Usually covering the mouth with the other hand may give either a polite or impolite connotation depending upon who interprets such gesture.

RAISED FOREHEAD ("Taas ang Nuo"): Either a symbol of pride or plain "proud" (palalo, mayabang).

SPITTING ON THE GROUND: Although this is a negative gesture showing disapproval of something or dislike of someone, spitting on the ground is not uncommon to older women who chew betel leaves, nuts and lime. (nganga)

WHISTLING "pssssst" is oftentimes used to call attention of not only children but also of anybody. Some people make a tune out of it especially if it's used to call a teenager's attention (flirting).

FINGER IN MOUTH: Asking for a cigarette.

RUBBING FINGER: Right pointer rubbing with the left pointer means he/she is asking for cigarette match/lighter.

WAVING HAND: Palm down moving the fingers back and forth means "Come Here" or "Good Bye."

ARM EXTENDED: A passenger extending an arm needs a ride usually seen in the cities and along the roads. In the provinces, passenger may even yell "para" (stop) along with this gesture.

ELBOWING: This is another attention getting gesture.

KISSING HANDS: Kissing the hand of an elderly is the most popular Filipino gesture to show respect for older people.

MOVING FOREFINGER BACK AND FORTH (PALM UP): A way of calling animals,
especially dogs and regarded as rude and belittling if used to beckon a person.

SMILING: A simple smile shown by a timid or shy Filipina means "Thank you" not only
for a gift but also for simple acceptance of gratitude and praise. A "smile begets a smile", if demonstrated by a young teen means so much to a young guy or a “heavenly” gesture to others.

MOUTH‑COVERED SMILE: Not only does this mean shyness, but it can also mean a sarcastic smile, depending upon the situation. Filipinos might even describe it as "ngiting‑aso" (dog smile) which is really very rude.

SIGN OF THE CROSS: This gesture is given to anybody who kissed the hand of an elderly.
It is also made by people leaving the house or passing by a church as well as before and after eating in giving thanks to God for grace. Depending upon usage of this gesture a left‑handed priest uses his right hand when blessing the people. *Note: See FOREHEAD RUBBING.

SILENCE: Being speechless and remaining silent mean "Yes," a sign that a lover would interpret as a mutual understanding of love. "Silent water runs deep." On the contrary, an impatient lover might think, “it’s a hopeless case.” Life must go on; it’s time to look for another one.

SHRUGGING SHOULDERS: This means "I don't know;” "I could care less."

TAPPING SHOULDER: A surprised greeting! Attention getting.

HANDSHAKING: A very friendly gesture commonly used by businessmen. "I'm glad to meet you." "How are you?" "Kumusta ka?" (Casual)

RUBBING THE SAINTS’ HANDS AND FEET: Rubbing the hands and feet of saints people
venerate and then rubbing them on the parts of their bodies for strong belief of its healing power.

FOOT TOUCHING/PUSHING: A very quiet gesture to let someone know that "enough was said or it basically means stop." (Usually done by a parent and child; or husband and wife, to avoid embarrassment.

FOOT STAMPING (DABOG, DAMBA): Children in disagreement or anger with (usually) their parents would release this bad feeling by stamping their feet. The harder they stamp their feet, the better they feel. This gesture is almost always coupled with pouting.

LEANING OVER: It basically indicates “I have something to whisper in your ears.” “Come a little closer.”

BENDING OVER (SLIGHTLY) WITH ONE ARM EXTENDED DOWNWARD: In passing between two people who are in the middle of a discussion, this gesture demonstrates politeness and respect for those people, with or without saying “Pardon me” or “Excuse me.”

CLICKING PLATE/GLASSWARE: A spoon is used to click the plate calling other family members for dinner if family does not want to call everybody's name. (Or used instead of saying "kakain na tayo," or the table is ready.)

PULLING AWAY FROM/HESITATING GESTURE: This means “with reservations.” "Hele‑Hele, bago quierre” attitude is demonstrated by a guest who is invited to dine this very moment, but doesn’t want to show how hungry he/she is. Doesn’t want the host to think that he/she is "patay‑gutom" either. In the guest’s subconscious mind is the saying "Ang tunay na anyaya, may kasamang hila” (An invitation that is truthful is coupled with a pull).

In love affair, "hele‑hele, bago quierre" is a pretense gesture, not necessarily being a hypocrite but just flirting to see how far the lover can go. They want to be sure it’s the right one. Serious lovers are extra careful about this matter.

NOT SENDING "THANK YOU" CARDS: This is traditionally and socially acceptable practiced by the Filipinos due to the unavailability of stationery in some parts of the country. They understand the gratefulness of their friends, however.

WIPING/SHAKING OFF SHOES/FEET: A beautiful gesture in respect for the homeowner.
(Not practiced during parties or “Fiestas”)

EXTRA EFFORT gestures are exhibited by children who are expecting a “Yes” or approval from their parents for a request. Children will do any house chores, run errands, etc. for a reward. They can even be in their best behavior and maintain good grades if they really want to. A trip to Manila, town, new clothes, shoes, and vacation to anywhere are rewards really worth working hard for.

TRAFFIC POLICE

And last but not the least
On this body gestures list
Look at drivers of busses and jeeps
Pedestrians too on Manila streets.

Watch the police direct city traffic
Look closely at his arms move so quick
His "paswit" (whistle) and actions so artistic
On the pedals push your feet quick!

(NOTE: Enjoy the artistic gestures of Manila police while you can. Color-coding of some vehicles improves the traffic and decreases pollution, and might possibly affect the police traffic‑directing, which has fascinated me since childhood.)

Other interpretation of these gestures depend upon the usage and perceptions of those concerned. However, these are only “as observed” and clarified with my former teacher/ principal in Hagonoy, Bulacan, Philippines, Mr. Vicente D. Santos (LA, California).

Angkan ng Garcia

~~

Isang libo siyam na raan at siyamnapu't anim
Sabik kong dinalaw ang mga pinsan namin
Sa New Jersey at New York, may kalayuan din
Kahit sandali lamang, kami nama'y nagkapiling.
~~
Napag-usapan nami'y ang Angkan ng Garcia
Amang Doro at Impong Huli na tumandang dalaga
Calixto, Delfin at Jacinto na kapatid nila
Dalawa lang ang nag-asawa sa kanilang lima.
~~
Isidoro at Florencia ang ninuno namin
Sa San Miguel nag-ugat at duon nanggaling
Ang dalawang angkan ay lumaki't lumagiw
Sa kabukiran umasa ng ikabubuhay rin.
~~
~~
Sina Calixto, Jacinto, at saka Huliana
Nagsitanda na lamang na walang asawa
At sa isang bubong ang kasama nila
Dalawang pamangkin, sina Sofia at Lucila.
~~
~~
Si Isabel nama ay tumanda ring dalaga
Katulad ng Impong Huli at ng Nana Benita
Mananahi ng damit ng mga pamangkin niya
At sa pagluluto naman ay walang kapara.
~~
~~
Sina Gloria, Honorata, at si Eduardo pa
Sumunod sina Teresa, Amelia, Rufino, at Marita
~~
At “Republic of the Philippines,” marami siya nito.
~~
Pintuloy sa aming bahay, may nagkanta-misa pa.
~~
~~
Nuong nabubuhay pa ang aming Amang Doro
Dalawang apong lalake, sina Jose Jr. at Eduardo
~~
Patola, alagaw, sitao, batao at kalabasa'y makikita
Atiesa, bayabas, santol, duhat, niyog, at papaya
Pakiling, saging, balimbing, suha, kaimito at mangga
Kape, granada, bunga, kalamansi, bulak, at paminta.
~~
May bahay-kubo, akasya, at kamoteng-kahoy
Ito’y inilalaga, sinusuman, ginagawang almirol
Ang Nanang Lucing, laging kailangan ng katulong.
~~
Kamatis at mais, tubo paminsan-minsan.
~~
Akin pang natandaan ay mapulang gumamela
Amarillo’t santan, at mabangong sampagita
Sama-sama kaming nagtutuhog at nagtitinda
~~
May tsiko, may saging, may mangga, at iba pang puno
~~
At lubos na mahigpit ang aming pamilya
Komiks, Bulaklak, at Liwayway ‘di naming mabasa
Patagu-tago pa kami at laging kakaba-kaba
Upang aming maiwasan ng mapagalitan pa.
~~
~~
~~
Mahusay silang dalawa as anumang sayawin
~~
~~
Dapat ding tandaan at huwag kakalimutan
~~
Kasabay kong lumaki sina Gloria at Nora
Laging ubos, kasyang-kasya at walang nalalabi.
~~
Narito sila at napakagandang pakinggan!
~~
~~
"Ang dalagang tumatanda, parang bigas na pinawa
Isabog mo man sa lupa, manok man ay ayaw tumuka."
~~
Iladlad mo man sa langit, ibon ma’y ayaw umukit."
~~
~~
Ako ay nagtanim ng kapirasong luya
Tumubo ay gabi namunga ng mangga
Nang pipitasin ko’y hinog na papaya
Bumagsak sa lupa’y magandang dalaga.”
~~
“Ito palang gugo ang bunga’y bayugo
Ibong is Tiklores balahibo’y pito
May pang araw-araw, may pang Linggu-Linggo
Bukod ang pamista, iba ang pamasko.”
~~
May isa pa ring magandang awitin
Ito’y tungkol sa isang damong mahiyain
“Makahiya” ang tawag napahinhing sambitin
Saulado ng Inang Abe, Nana Bita’t Nanang Lucing.”
~~
~~
Ang mga pangalan ng mga nangamatay na
Binubuhay, ginagamit sa bagong silang sa pamilya
Unang-una ay Calixto, Isidoro and pangalawa
~~
Ito ang mahal naming Angkan ng Garcia
Kahit maraming tumandang dalaga
At nangag-sitandang mga binata pa
Ipinagmamalaki’t karangalan pa rin nila.
~~
Nanang Lucing, Nana Nena, Lette, at Nelson
Bumalik ang lumipas at masasaya naming kahapon.

The Balatbat Ancestry

The ancestry search started in October 1983

With my children’s' homework, "Construct a Family Tree"

I recalled the names of my own family

Tata Piso sketched mainly the "Hilarion Tree."

~~

A family tree was purchased for me

I began to write down names from my memory

Filled with a feeling of inadequacy, I searched more intensely

Asking many relatives for locations of distant family.

~~

Answers to my questions were not found easily

During the year, our tree grows sometimes rapidly

If we don't trace the roots or our ancestry

We'll lose the memory of our relatives, our genealogy.

~~

Each year, the chart keeps growing; it's on a coat of wood

We have to step back and trace the inner wood

It can't be left alone, decay like distant memories, it could

Lacquer it with filial love, this I believe, we should.

~~

In July of 1996, I went to New Jersey

I visited cousins from the Garcia Family

Reynaldo Balatbat was introduced to me

We talked about Apo Pitong, Ellenita and Josie.

~~

Mary Ann, Bobby, Aurora, and Nana Letty

Impong Biste, Apo Ibiang, and Apo Vicente

San Isidro, San Miguel, almost everybody

About the "Balatbats", he sent me a history.

~~

From some relatives, we have learned

Some birth records may have been burned

Informed all of those that are concerned

In this family effort, pride, and integrity will be learned.

~~

Assistance of Lette was asked by Tanny

Cousins Rico, Rene, with the help of Necy

Many relatives’ names were given to me

By Nelson, cousin Eddie, and sister Fely's family.

~~

Then Nana Linda and Nana Fely came in the picture

Shining bright lights to work of this nature

With all intentions that are clear and pure

Our family's inquiries will be answered, that's for sure.

~~

Research of Apo Pecto, Apo Pacio, and Uncle Rey

In the 1980s, they worked on the tree day after day

Tracing our roots while others sincerely pray

That more names will surface, hopefully someday.

~~

Tony from Binasal called up his father

Grandpa Albino, he inquired further

Father of Macario and Ursula, his sister

And to Igmedio, he was a very good uncle.

~~

Aunts, uncles, cousins, and names of relations

These updated our records, updates continue in action

Eyes grew big and everything is now in motion

What a blessing it is, this work of love and devotion!

~~

Yes, indeed! It's a huge Family quest

Legal names I insist and continue to request

A phone call at home, check drawers or chest

It's our "historial record;" this is not a test!

~~

And a Web-site idea, oh how wonderful!

In this, Nana Fely is talented, and very skillful

Her day's schedule is heavy, and "to do" list is full

For her work on the "tree", we are very grateful!

~~

I encourage all of you to send any information

Uncle Rey and Nana Fely assure us of some satisfaction

We cannot expect accuracy nor can we expect perfection

But we are the "bridge builders" to the succeeding generation.

~~

Now that the "tree" appears so much bigger

Its branches and limbs are a lot sturdier

While the roots are growing deeper and deeper

Our vigilant nurturing is needed, making the trunk ever stronger.

~~

The tree will need nutrients and real substance

For the flowers to bloom and give the sweetest fragrance

We shall maintain its beauty and radiance

The "Family Tree" will look gorgeous, even from a distance.

~~

Lots of "Balatbat" families are now on the record

For this project, multiple copies, certainly, I can afford

We can post all the charts on a huge display board

Our dear families will enjoy with one accord.

~~

"Many Thanks" to all of who help and contiually helping

Together, we say "thank You," Oh dear Lord!

Angkan ng Balatbat

~~

Parang kulang man din, inisip kong saliksikin

Ang mga kamag-anak na kung saan-saan nakarating.

~~

Mahirap masagot ang aking mga katanungan

Sapagkat mabilis yumabong itong ating angkan

Kung hindi hahanapin yaong pinanggalingan

Mawawala nang lahat ang ating kamag-anakan.

~~

Ang katawang lumaki sa ugat na tinubuan

Taun-taon ay tumataas, lumalapad araw-araw

Kalingain natin ito, hindi dapat mapabayaan

Ang pagtingin nating mahal, ang tanging kailangan.

~~

~~

Mary Ann, Bobby, Aurora, at saka Nana Letty

Impong Biste, Apo Ibiang, at Apo Vicente

San Isidro, San Miguel, kamag-anak ay kasale

Pinagmulan ng Balatbat, nagbigay na walang atubile.

~~

Ayon din sa marami nating mga kamag-anakan

Maaaring nasunog ang talaan ng mga pangalan

Ito'y ipinabatid sa lahat ng kinauukulan

Anumang labasan nito'y isa nating karangalan.

~~

~~

~~

~~

~~
